Akagera National Park lies in eastern Rwanda, hugging the border with Tanzania. It’s characterised by woodland, swamps, low mountains and Savannah. The varied terrain shelters wildlife including zebras, giraffes, elephants, lions and hundreds of bird species, such as the rare shoebill stork. In the southern part of the park, vast Lake Ihema is home to hippos and crocodiles.
The Park is closer to a town called Kibungu, the perfect starting point for tourist activities in the park. Today, early morning, we leave Kigali at 5:00 am for a day trip to Akagera National Park, which is about 2 hrs and a half hours away from Kigali. The park is mainly a Savannah park with elephants, zebras, giraffes, buffaloes, different antelopes and recently introduced lions.
Upon arrival, we shall have a quick registration and then start on our adventure. After lunch, we shall go for a boat ride on Lake Ihema, where we shall be able to see the water birds and animals. Later, we shall return to Kigali.
Early in the morning, after breakfast, you will be picked by your driver who will drive you to Nyungwe, but on the way, we shall visit Huye mountain coffee to learn the process of coffee making and the Coffee Quality control and testing laboratory, and also the National Museum of Rwanda, which is one of the richest in Africa in terms of culture.
After visiting the museum, we shall have lunch in Butare and proceed to Nyanza to visit the King’s Palace museum. Then, after advancing to Nyungwe for an overnight and dinner at Gisakura guest house.
Nyungwe is located in the southwest of Rwanda, partly abutting the Burundi border. It’s a vast area of mountain rainforest, home to many species of chimpanzees, plus owl-faced and colobus monkeys. Covering over 1000 square kilometres, Nyungwe is surely one of the world’s most beautiful and pristine mountain rainforests. It’s believed to be one of Africa’s oldest forests, staying green even through the Ice Age, which explains its diversity.
Early in the morning, after your breakfast, you will be driven to the park headquarters for a briefing before starting your trek. You will be told the don’ts and dos of the trek. Trekking with the chimpanzees starts at 5:00 am, which enables easy viewing as the chimpanzees are in their nests. You will be given 1 hour with the chimps, the trekking lasts 2 to 3 hours, and later on, we transfer to Kibuye for an overnight at Rebero Kivu resort.
Early morning after your breakfast, you will head to the volcanoes park headquarters in Kinigi at 7:00 am, where you will register with the office and meet your assigned ranger guide and the other hiking members. The ranger will give you important information about the park. By 8:00 am, you will be transferred to the starting point of the trek, which is about a 30 to 45-minute drive.
You can also hire a porter to carry your luggage at a fee of 20 USD.
After a beautiful view of the summit, you will embark on the trek back down, a faster one but more slippery. The porters will come in handy. It will take about 2 hours, touch base, meet your driver and leave for Kigali, expecting to arrive in the evening.
