6 Days Birding and Chimpanzee Trek

On arrival, you will meet our driver guide who will check you in at the hotel, have lunch, then head out for a 4 hrs city tour. Overnight and dinner at the Onomo hotel.

Breakfast will be at 6:00 am, and by 7:00 am, we will transfer to Nyungwe National Park. Along the way, you will see the magnificent hills of Rwanda. You will have a stopover at the ethnographic museum (2 hours’ drive from Kigali), which provides insight into Rwanda’s history and culture.

Lunch break will be at Butare, then continue to Nyungwe at 2:00 pm. If time allows, we shall do an afternoon birding and an overnight at Nyungwe Top View Hotel.

We shall have breakfast as early as 4:00 am, and in order to be at the park headquarters at 4:30 am for a briefing before we start the trek. You will then be driven to the starting point at 5:00 am with your guide and group; this will enable you to find the chimps in their nests.

And you will be allowed 1 hour with the chimps, and it will be a 4 km & 5 hr hike. After our lunch break, we shall go birding in the evening. Nyungwe has a species of 300 birds, and the easiest place to see them is the Albertine Rift Valley endemic. Then, after returning to the hotel for dinner and overnight.Nyungwe top view hotel

Kibuye is known as a beach resort and is within driving distance of two national parks. It is home to a genocide memorial marking the massacre of 90% of the town’s Tutsi population in the Rwandan Civil War. And Nyamunini is one of the highest island in eastern side of Lake Kivu (its elevation is more than 1600 m).

It is located about 10 km from Karongi town. The name “Napoleon Hat Island” came from its shape. It looks like Emperor Napoleon’s hat (Ancient French).

Gishwati Shelters over 84 20 birds of which are endemic to the Albertine region. Gishwati Mukura National Park is undeniably an exceptional birding spot. Expect to see different bird species, not missing the wood hoopoe, Rwenzori Turaco, weaver bird species, martial eagle, white-headed wood hoopoe, Mountain yellow warbler and Old World warblers, among others.

Experienced guides help you to spot these birds and explain all the unique features of each spotted bird species.

After breakfast we shall travel to Bugesera for birding mainly to the Savannah grassland and after the excursion you will return to Kigali and then be driven to the airport for your flight.
