About Mgahinga
Mgahinga gorilla national park is located in the south western part of Uganda in Kisoro district and it is the smallest National park of the 3 national parks in the Virunga conservation area the other two parks are Virunga National park in DRC and Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and all form 434-sq.km of this conservation area. The park was established in 1991 and it is governed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority with a size of 33.7-sq. km and it lies between altitudes 2,227m and 4,127m. It covers 3 of the Virunga volcanoes which are Mt. Muhavura (4,127), Mt. Gahinga (3,474), and Mt. Sabinyo (3,645). Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is a national park in southwestern Uganda. It was created in 1991 and covers an area of 33.9 km².Mgahinga National park was established majorly to protect the mountain gorillas and in this same park also endangered Golden monkeys have made it their habitat. Mgahinga National Park is about 39 mammals of these including the Mountain gorillas, buffaloes and elephants, also endangered golden monkeys. Others include; giant forest hogs, bush bucks, leopards, spotted hyenas, black fronted duikers among others. It also has around 79 bird species. While in the park there is only one group that is tracked which is the Nyakagezi gorilla group
Detailed tour
Day 1: Transfer to Uganda through the Cyanika border
Late in the afternoon after having your lunch, your driver guide will pick you up and you transfer to Uganda for Mgahinga national park through the boarder of Cyanika (2hr 34mins) drive to the border. Upon arrival at the border, we shall register with the immigration office for (15mins) and then proceed to your Hotel Lake Mulehe safari lodge for overnight and dinner (1hour drive)
Day 2: Gorilla trekking
Early in the morning, you will wake up for a beautiful breakfast and head out with your packed lunch later on you will be driven to the starting point around 30 mins drive, it’s from here that you will get a short briefing about the short hike that will lead you to the’ Muhavura base camp’ for a briefing with your two guides who will lead you to the gorilla family that you will be visiting. The gorilla trekking briefing start 08:00 am Ugandan time. The trekking takes 1 to 7 hours including the 1 hour that you are given to be in the presence of the gorillas. Although this time is unpredictable, sometimes you might take short or long time trekking depending on the location of the gorillas. After the trekking we shall drive back to Kigali with an optional stopover to buy some snacks if you would like.Driving back to Kigali will take us 4 hours to reach Kigali and be transferred to your hotel.
