The tour will mainly carry the western province of Rwanda a region boarding Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda. It’s highly characterized with Afro-Montana rain forest. Home to the endemic bird species of the Albertine rift valley and also the rare primates like the mountain gorillas’, golden monkey and chimpanzee.
Day 1: Arrival at Kigali international airport
On arrival you will meet our driver guide who will check you in at the hotel have lunch then head out for a 4 hrs city tour Overnight and dinner at Onomo hotel
Day 2: Transfer to Nyungwe national park and to the national museum.
Breakfast will be at 6:00am then by 7:00am we transfer to Nyungwe national park, along the way you will see the magnificent hills of Rwanda. You will have a stopover at the ethnographic museum (2hrs drive from Kigali) which provides insight into Rwanda history and culture. Lunch break will be at Butare then continue to Nyungwe at 2:00pm,if time allows we shall do an afternoon birding and an overnight at Nyungwe top view hotel.
Day 3: Trekking Chimpanzee and afternoon birding
We shall have breakfast as early as 4:00 am and in order to be at the park headquarters at 4:30 am for briefing before we start the trekking. You will then be driven to the starting point at 5:00 am with your guide and group; this will enable you to find the chimps in their nests. And you will be allowed 1 hour with the chimps and it will be a 4 km & 5 hr hike. After our lunch break, we shall go for birding in the evening. Nyungwe has a species of 300 birds and the easiest place to see them is the Albertine rift valley endemic. Then after return to the hotel for dinner and overnight .Nyungwe top view hotel
Day 4: Transfer to Kibuye and boating to Nyamunini Island.
Kibuye is known as a beach resort and is within driving distance of two national parks. It is home to a genocide memorial marking the massacre of 90% of the town’s Tutsi population in the Rwandan Civil War. And Nyamunini is one of highest island in eastern side on Lake Kivu (its elevation is more than 1600 m). It is located about 10 km from Karongi town. The name “Napoleon Hat Island” came from its shape. It looks like Emperor Napoleon’s hat (Ancient French).
After breakfast we shall first head to Kibuye at 7:00am along the shores of Lake Kivu. It’s among the largest fresh water lakes on the Albertine rift valley. We shall have a stopover at bisesero Genocide memorial site to learn about the horrible history at this hill. After having lunch in Kibuye at 1:00pm, we shall head out at 2:00pm for a boat ride experience to Nyamunini Island, inhabited by 50,000 bats and also more than 100 bird species. There after you will be driven to Rwiza village for dinner and overnight.
Day 5: Birding at Gishwati forest and transfer to bugesere
Gishwati Shelters over 84 20 birds of which are endemic to the Albertine region, Gishwata Mukura national park is undeniably an exceptional birding spot. Expect to see different bird species not missing the wood hoops, Rwenzori Turaco, weaver bird species, martial eagle, white headed wood hoopoe, Mountain yellow warbler and Old world warblers among others. Experienced guides help you to spot these birds and explain all the unique features about each spotted bird species.
After breakfast we shall drive to Gishwati forest which is home to over 209 species of birds and also 20 over them are endemic to the Albertine rift region. After birding we shall drive to bugesere lodge for overnight and dinner.
Day 6: Short Birding at Bugesera and return to Kigali for flight.
After breakfast we shall travel to bugesere for birding mainly to the Savannah grassland and after the excursion you will return to Kigali and then be driven to the airport for your flight.
