Naming a newborn baby has been part of Rwandan culture and tradition for centuries, introduced in 2005 with the aim of creating awareness of conservation efforts for the endangered mountain gorillas.
kwita izina translated as ‘giving a name’ in Kinyarwanda, is a ceremony that is organised by the Rwanda Development board (R.D.B).

Each year, newborn baby gorillas are celebrated in an exciting event at the foothills of the Virunga Mountains. These names given to the gorillas play a significant role in the ongoing programme of monitoring each individual gorilla in their families and habitats.
Furthermore, there will be a kwita izina concert on the 7th of September at the KCC auditorium starting 10pm with the American singer Ne-Yo and Meddy from Rwanda.
